This is one of my favourite instruments for total beginners – you can begin to play tunes that you will recognise within a couple of lessons.
I’m very happy to start pupils from the ages of 7 years old even if they have had little or no previous musical experience.

A piano or keyboard at home – in the early stages this can be a smallish keyboard.
Eventually an instrument with full size weighted keys will be needed – I can advise on this.

About Tutor Sam
My name is Sam Banks – most of my pupils just call me Sam which is fine with me. I play several instruments, but piano is one of my favourites as you can not only play the tune with the chords but play many different styles of music too.
I am very fortunate to come from a family of musicians – my father was Director of Music at a specialist music college where I went to school and my mother is a piano teacher who also plays flute and clarinet to a very high standard.
I have taught piano to pupils of the 7 – 10 age group on previous occasions and that was before I went to the University of Chichester to study Music Performance. My instrumental specialism was piano and flute with an emphasis on stylistic performance.
In addition to my instrumental studies, I studied harmony and advanced theory, history of music, sight reading and aural awareness as well as analysis of form, structure, orchestration and composition.
I have played in numerous orchestras on the piano, violin and flute and have given concerts overseas notably in Chartres France as well as Chichester University and here in Eastbourne with the Eastbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Recommendations
“Sam came to work as a support assistant in my classroom. As Head of Music and knowing about his musical abilities, I asked him to give piano lessons to a number of the more disadvantaged children in the class.
This he did, with unerring kindness and patience. The children loved the opportunity, and enjoyed their lessons a great deal. They were devastated when he left to continue his studies.”
“I am a long-standing friend of Sam’s and know him as being kind and thoughtful, generously giving of his time to help others. This has become particularly obvious in his work supporting pupils in Junior Schools in and around Eastbourne. Sam is an accomplished musician with an impressive range of musical skills. In particular I have enjoyed his flute playing, which I was able to witness many a time, but most recently in Chichester when Sam was performing in the University Orchestra and Wind Band as a student.”
Sam was my teaching assistant in classroom music lessons.
In addition to his impressive ability on numerous instruments, including piano, flute, violin and guitar, Sam has endless patience and enthusiasm in his teaching.
He has an empathetic approach to young learners and I highly recommend him.
Former Director of Music at a Specialist Music College
I have witnessed Sam working in music lessons with young people between ages of 8 and 14. Although Sam posesses an amazing array of musical skills he is very reassuring and encouraging to those even at a beginner level. I know that Sam taught the piano to a number of 8 and 9 year olds – pupils made good progress and seemed very happy to attend the individual lessons with him. The reports I received from parents were unfailingly positive about their child’s piano lessons with Sam. They said that he was kind, patient and explained things very carefully. I’m certain that you will find that Sam is an excellent teacher for your child.
